Since our launch of the Lighting for Real Estate Photography video series last Friday we’ve received an overwhelming response to both the series and the video giveaway. Feedback from subscribers has been fantastic (you can read about it HERE) and the number of entries into our giveaway blew me away. Narrowing it down to five winners was difficult but I think you’ll agree, after watching the winning entries, that these five clearly stand out. Lighting for Real Estate Photography Video Giveaway!
Scott and I are really excited to launch our new Lighting for Real Estate Photography video series and to celebrate we’ve decided to give away a few subscriptions! How do you get one? Read on…
For us, success means making a difference in the industry. We think that the ideal person to receive this subscription is someone who is poised to take their photography to the next level. Talk to us! Tell us what your day to day challenges are. Tell us what you want to improve in your photography. Tell us how the Lighting for Real Estate Photography subscription help? Easy, right? Here’s the catch.
Since this is a video series all entries must be in the form of a video. Don’t be scared. Be creative! Almost everyone these days has a video camera whether it’s the Canon 5d2, your iPhone or even a webcam. Just be creative with it. Give us something that will make us remember you!
Here are the official rules:
1) Video should be 30-60 seconds. Much longer and we probably won’t make it to the end.
2) Video must be uploaded as a public video to YouTube with the following keywords: “Lighting for Real Estate Photography”, “Video giveaway”
3) Link to the video must be emailed to info@lightingforrealestatephotography.com. Links left in the comments section of the blog may or may not be noticed. Please email.
4) Entry must be uploaded and link emailed to us by February 15, 2012, 5:00 pm PST.
5) Send us your name, website, and email address in your email with your entry. Your log in to the videos is with your email address so please send a real email address. In return I promise not to share or sell it to anyone.
6) By entering this contest you agree to let us (Malia Campbell Photography, Scott Hargis Photo) use your video entry to help promote our series.

The big announcement – Lighting for Real Estate Photography instructional videos!
I’m really excited to finally be able to talk about the super secret project I’ve been working on! I’ve collaborated with Scott Hargis to develop a series of instructional videos aimed at the photographer interested in using off camera flash to shoot interiors. Phew, that was a mouthful.

This was a really fun project to work on and I know you’re going to learn a lot! Here are some details that you might be wondering about:
- Release date is scheduled for March 1st. If we’re ready to go live earlier I’ll let you know here first!
- Video (and more details) will be available at LightingForRealEstatePhotography.com but don’t click yet. The website’s still under construction.
- We’re not releasing DVDs but your paid subscription allows unlimited access to the videos.
- Videos (and entire website) are mobile friendly so you can watch at home, at a coffee shop, or even on a shoot!
- Sorry, no discounts for pre-release sales. In fact, there are no pre-release sales.
- Video subscriptions will be $175.00.

Staying organized on a video shoot
It’s a snowy day in Seattle so I’m taking the afternoon as an Office Day!
I had a few questions about how I stay organized when shooting video in response to yesterday’s Behind the Scenes video so I made a quick video for you to describe my system. This will probably only be interesting to videographers (and aspiring videographers) so apologies to the rest of you. Go ahead and just skip this video.
Shooting video of oneself is not easy so please forgive the soft focus. Also I forgot to mention one big point: a HUGE advantage of blocking out your scenes is that it allows you to shoot in whatever order you want. Sometimes it’s not convenient or even possible to shoot scenes in order. If you start with a tight script (or outline) and number your scenes it allows you the freedom to shoot in any order that’s convenient.

1/18/12 UPDATE – Yes, I already have an update to this. I was just watching a video preview of the LR4 beta and I really like the features they’re offering. I really doubt that I’d do any actual editing on video clips BUT the preview function looks awesome. That’s the one feature that Bridge can’t really provide for video (double clicking opens in QT, not in Bridge). And before you tell me that you actually can preview in Bridge, I know that, but it’s stuttery and unwatchable (maybe I have a slow graphics card?). Has anyone tested the video features in LR4 yet? I’m going to download it later today and test it out.

Magnolia Townhouses
Happy New Year everyone! I hope you guys had a great holiday season and did something fun to ring in the new year. Things over here at Malia Campbell Photography HQ have 
been CRAZY busy. Lots of travel, lots of shooting (photo and video) and lots of… well, I guess that’s all I’ve really been doing. I have several really exciting projects on the horizon (I know I’ve been saying that for awhile) but, if you bear with me just a little while longer, I’m going to have a ridiculously huge announcement that I think you’ll be just as excited to hear.
But for now, I’m sharing a shoot I did yesterday.
The history: Remember this iPhone photo from forever ago? That day I was shooting some “Before” photos for one of my favorite clients, Beachworks LLC. It was a four unit modern townhouse out in Magnolia with a killer view. Long story short, due to crazy schedules I wasn’t able to get in to shoot the actual listing photos but since my client knew I was eager to shoot the finished (staged) space, he gave me access yesterday. I spent a few hours by myself (and Bach on the iPod) shooting the space. It was incredibly liberating knowing that I didn’t have to worry about shooting for anyone but myself and, I have to say, I haven’t enjoyed shooting like that in quite awhile.

Ronda Mountain Retreat
On my recent trip to Europe (Spain, Italy, France) I spent four amazing days at the Ronda Mountain Retreat. Nestled among the rustic hills of the Andalusian Mountains and just 15 minutes from the historic/tourist section of Ronda we were firmly ensconced in the lap of luxury. Tended to by the on-site staff we woke to hot coffee and farm fresh eggs each morning, spent the days exploring the 700+ acre working farm grounds (dogs, kittens, horses, goats, and chickens, oh my!) with random trips into Ronda to see the famous bridge, the oldest bull fighting ring in Spain and to drink lots of wine and eat lots of authentic Spanish tapas!
The cortijo itself was just gorgeous! Rooms were beautifully decorated and space was ample. Several evenings were spent in the living room around the crackling fire, drinking local wine and snacking on local hams and cheeses while enjoying our rustic surroundings.
I’m looking forward to another stay at The Ronda Mountain Retreat and you should consider them, too! It’s an amazing space for a girls wine tasting weekend, weddings, workshops or if you just need to get away for awhile. The trees of Cortijo Rasero
It was the morning of our first full day at Cortijo Rasero. We had just finished breakfast (an amazing omelette made of fresh farm eggs and local goat cheese!) and were… well, I was jet lagged and I have no idea what we were doing. I remember being in the living room, though, and noticing these trees, blowing in the wind. There was something hypnotic about the way the leaves caught the light as they fluttered about. And the sound of the leaves and the wind… it was beautiful. I knew I had to capture this.
