Exporting photos: Lightroom or Bridge?

Several months ago I made the transition from a PC to a Mac. Switching platforms was easier than I expected (thankfully) but one thing I hadn’t anticipated was the change it caused in my workflow. Some things, bad habits mostly, that I was able to do easily on my PC weren’t possible on a Mac.

One change to my workflow has been how I export files for delivery to clients. On my PC I had an action set up in Photoshop to resize, sharpen and save images as .jpgs. For some reason I’m having difficulties with creating actions on the Mac (sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t) and even more bizarre, I’m unable to save a .tif as a .jpg.

Partly because of this and partly because of my new archiving system (The DAM Book has changed my life!) I started using Lightroom for exporting files. It was quick, I could save my settings for each resolution batch and it auto sharpened for web or print, which I liked.

iPhone

This was kind of sad. I was walking down Broadway and noticed they had finally gotten around to taking the Siam sign down. Not that I was particularly fond of that restaurant (pretty generic thai food) but that was where I took Scott on one of our first Seattle dates. It’s been there forever. And now it’s fallen prey to the fallen economy. RIP Siam on Broadway.

Featured in SFMoMA’s blog

I sort of forgot to mention but… remember that triptych I made of Scott at the rooftop garden of the SFMoMA? It was featured on their blog. Not quite the same as actually exhibiting in the MoMA but definitely a step in the right direction.

On my walk home from Tully’s on 19th and Aloha I cut through Volunteer Park. It was such a nice day I was kicking myself for not having a book to read so I could hang out amidst all the naturey goodness.

But then I remembered how much I hate nature and trundled along.

One last post before I go back to work.

For those who are stuck in the iPhone 3G contract but are still charmed by the video capability on the 3GS check this out: Qik Video Camera. I downloaded it yesterday and it works!

Big thanks to Scott for forwarding the link.

I have video on my iPhone now!  w00t!

The business of marketing

I’m in the middle of a pretty aggressive marketing campaign which includes emails, postcards, handwritten notes and (eep!) phone calls.  I’m not the greatest at self promotion so the phone calls are causing a bit of stress at The Cottage this week.

A few weeks ago I was having some post-workshop drinks with the .au crew and the topic of marketing came up.  Someone, I can’t remember who, mentioned they were targeting local agents who were already using a professional photographer (smart!) but who they were better than.  This made me laugh to myself as I was thinking, “What if you’re not better than anybody else?

Now that I’m home, this comment is weighing heavily on my mind.  I have a list of local Realtors that I’m going to be calling next week.  I’m systematically checking each one to see 1) if they have current listings, 2) if they’re using a professional photographer, and 3) if I’m better than their current photographer.  I’m only about halfway through the list but, I swear to god, I haven’t answered yes to number three for anyone yet.

I have to end this evening on a high note so I’m going to get back to my list in the hopes of at least one yes.  Wish me luck!
